Don’t Put Out the Welcome Mat for Termites

Termites live in the soil and are attracted to wood and moisture.  They travel underground, through wood, and in darkness.  You can help us protect your home from termite attach by taking certain steps so that your treatment lasts as long as possible.

  • Fix leaky faucets, water hoses and connections, and pipes along the foundation wall.
  • Repair roof leaks, and repair or replace leaky gutters and downspouts.
  • Keep gutters free of leaves, and make sure downspouts take rainwater away from the foundation.
  • Make sure sprinkler systems do not spray onto your siding or foundation walls.
  • Grade the soil around the foundation so that water flows away from your home.
  • Do not disturb the soil within 18 inches of the foundation wall of your soil has been treated. Do not plant shrubs, flowers, or vegetables in this 18-inch zone.
  • Avoid direct wood-to-ground contact unless the wood has been pressure-treated.
  • Remove all wood debris from the soil in a crawlspace.
  • Do not pile wood mulch against the foundation wall; leave a few inches of bare soil.
  • Do not stack firewood against the house.
